Big Eyes & Thick Skinned

Today cinema time, we have seen the film <Big Eyes>, which illustrated a story that a painter and a trickster lived together from comfy couple to bringing a lawsuit. Here are some comments I learned from the heroine.

1. Good paintings are works that touches people's heart.

2. Good work is the key to an artist, publicity is important though.

3. Art belongs artists' own

4. Whatever how talent the artists are, they also need franchise. If Margaret did not paint big eyes, she would not re-brilliant.

5. Sometimes, artist cannot cater to the public, while businessman can do.
6. The proof of the pudding is in the eating.

Something about GDAD

Today, it is a great honor to visit the GDAD show in school exhibition room. The show is well curated because each exhibit has been displayed in a suitable place.

Throughout the show, the most powerful work in my opinion was some works in ‘Lo Studio’, it is not in my major though. The main reason why I like them because the main idea that is about creating a new collection of Chinese ceramics and company brand surrounding this, which I can got when I first saw the works.

However, ‘A Sailing Process’ is little disappointingly for me because what the idea from was not connect with the real project location. After I had an interview for the designer, I got that his idea source was about something symbolic instead of the terrain or surrounding. Maybe it will be improved in the future main course. Also, compared with other work in the show, his final exhibit, whatever the picture or the model, was little rough. After all, this major is hard and he just has been learnt about architecture a year, I believe he can do better in the future. In the interview, I found it is clear to see a link between the work and the future course, because he learnt to use several softwares to finish his work, which is quite useful to learn his major, whatever in main course or in his future career.

Some feelings about morning lecture

Today, we have a wonderful lecture about a book, Way of seeing, in the morning and then discussed the ideas in a seminar. Later in the break time, I had a skim-reading in this book and here are some my feelings about this book and lecture.

Initially, one of point in this book is image, which is kind of remix instead of traditional images that wen can see by our eyes. Image in the book all tried to illustrate a main idea that is the way of seeing. Each final image was good enough by every creator. However, during seeing, losing something is inevitable. The process ignored is the main point that discussed in this book.

During the lecture, tutor told us the difference between skim-reading and close-reading and the outline of a book, which is very useful for me to do research in further course. Also, we learned the reason why different people would have different feelings after reading the same book, which is our culture, belief, context and so on.

Something about Maker

There are some comments after seeing a film named Maker in school cinema this afternoon.

On the one hand, there is no doubt that the boom in science and technology has had a profound influence on people’s lives in contemporary. The film is so wonderful that I almost screamed when I saw such interesting products. For example, a little girl can make many electronic products and use lots of tools that are hard to use. Making things is a native ability for people.

On the other hand, people prefer to buy products designed or made by others rather than they just do it. That’s why people feel amazing when they saw the action in the film. People are used to be a buyer instead of a maker. So we should try to make something to avoid losing the ability to be a maker.

In conclusion, we should be a maker. Maybe this is the one of the aims of the film.

Some feelings after seeing the talk show by Chase Jarvis (CJ)

He is the one of the most special photographer that I know. Through out his talk show, I learned some new ideas.  'Creativity is the New Literacy' CJ said. His words are positive to illustrate creativity is very significant for everyone. 'Creativity is a drug I cannot live with out' said by another artist. However, today we have a creativity crisis, especially in my country.

When I was very young, I have painting course. At that time, I knew my painting was good, if I drew something or someone like the real one. Once I did not draw like this, people would say 'what are you drawing?' or 'you do not have painting gift'...So I found I just had the skills of drawing instead of creativity, I need creativity. Maybe this is the main reason why I am here, even though my major was Architecture which belongs to engineering in my country. I can do nothing but improving my creativity. I will not only be an architect, but also a creative architect in the further.

Group Work—Project 3

This is a very special experience for me to do a real project with my group members here, even though it is not my only group work these years. In this essay, I will illustrate in some aspects which are what I have learned from this project and how I engaged with the relevant research.

Initially, we all agreed with the idea, which is ‘The Face’ in the first week, which we want to show is that appearance is not the most significant thing. In short order, everybody chose a job and prepared some tools to show how their jobs like. Before that, we all took our own faces’ pictures and we needed to cover our face. For example, I chose make-up artist as my job so I used some make-up brushes and painted some pattern to cover my face to demonstrate our opinion. It was little hard for me to reach their aim because I seldom know art like this. It was helpful of my group members to help me to finish my work. They are all very creative. Maybe I need read more books about plane formation or other about art.

Subsequently, I want to say something about our proposal. I have not written an essay like this until we started writing it. It is more academic than IELTS’s writing. It was very patient of our tutor to make us kwon each part of proposal and the format. When I wrote some part of the proposal, I found that I always used my way in my hometown that may be hard to understand by local people. I need to change my way. Also I learned many words and grammar throughout writing proposal.

Moreover, I felt little nervous on the presentation day in Margate, although I just needed to say three sentences and I had exercised again and again. However it is good for me to practice speaking English, and presentation skills. However, it is a great trip in Margate that is a beautiful sea town and a brilliant exhibition.

In conclusion, I felt little tired but substantial in this group work. Almost everday I can learn new things. I am looking forward to next project.

I have never known Ai Weiwei until I started my course of PSEAD in UCA .When I saw the video this afternoon ,I had no idea because it was a bombshell for me .He is so multi-talented .Though out the documentary ,what impressed me most was <Remembering> .This issue will illustrate what the work represents and my own opinion about it .

Initially ,the work was to commemorate the victims of the victims of 5·12 Wenchuan earthquake in China and remember anyone who have suffered.Also ,it is in order to condemn the shoddy construction .Subsequently ,the mean of the Chinese words consist of multi-colour schoolbags is represent satire of government because of hiding the truth .Moreover ,the main purpose was to call on more and more people take part in maintenance of social justice .Of course ,it is just in my mind .

In my opinion, although it seems to be beneficial for people in some case, we should not neglect its drawback to individuals .For example, some people may lose faith in government and they might do any work with negative emotions, which cause social stop progress .In addition, there is no doubt that art have its own bottom line .So I believe that the exhibition of the wall full of school bags is enough to make government known own mistakes .In this regard, it is becoming better nowadays. In conclusion, Weiwei’s works are very meaningful especially in <Remembering>, but morality in our everyday life is more important to social justice.
